Sabino Canyon to Phoneline Crossing

Today's hike was a sortie of sorts—an attempt to find the mysterious Sabino Creek crossing to the Phoneline Trail and the Blackett's Ridge Trail to Saddleback. My plan was to hike down the Sabino Canyon tram road for a mile or so, cross over Sabino Creek to the spur trail 27A that switchbacks up to the Phoneline Trail 27 that hugs the canyon walls high above the road. The plan was to then hike Phoneline to the end of the canyon and descend back to the road for the trip back for a total of 8 miles. It did not go according to Hoyle.

I felt a bit like Roald Amundsen looking for the elusive Northwest Passage, ironically not blocked in my endeavor by ice but by ice and snow melt; the stream was gushing, and even the Sabino Crawler tram road was overflowing. So I settled for a ramble on several of the side trails, to Sabino Lake and Sabino Dam. Next trip up Blackett's or Phoneline will just require a doffing of shoes and socks and a frigid wade through the spillway.

Not much of a hike, more like a walk in the park.

Beautiful morning, temps in the low 40s climbing to 65º by afternoon.

No crossing this today.

Sabino Creek even overflowed the tram road about two miles in.

One final attempt to cross, this time on an old service road near the dam. This would be easy enough were I not so keen to keep my shoes and socks on.
