Riding My Birthday (and Then Some)

Rode my annual birthday ride today. Actually, I joined forces with my friend Carl and we rode his. Carl is eight years older. He turns 74 next Sunday, and I turned 66 last Sunday. My original plan was to ride to Perry for pupusas at this great little Salvadoran restaurant because it is exactly 33 miles one way from my house. But since we rode from Carl’s place down town, the ride actually turned out to be 78 miles. Man, I gotta get me some younger friends, maybe some who aren’t in such good shape as Carl! We were also joined by friends Steve and Jeff for the Waukee-Perry portion. The 20-mile ride back from Perry was a bear, with 20 mph sustained headwinds that gusted to 40 mph. That took almost two hours. Suffice to say, I am sufficiently knackered to take the rest of the night off and veg on the couch.

The wonderful pupusas at La Ventura.
