Oregon Tour 2014 Day 2: Nehalem Bay State Park to Cape Lookout State Park

This morning we got up, I dug out my Snow Peak titanium French press and made some camp coffee (the best kind of coffee), and rode five miles to Wheeler, a little coastal fishing village. Had some more coffee, and some ok pastries in a non-descript coffee shop and bakery on the main drag, next to the Tsunami Bar and Grill.

Tsunami talk was all the rage on the Oregon coast. Apparently, they're long overdue for an earthquake and subsequent big wave, the likes of which denuded the coastline from Oregon on up into British Columbia around 250 years ago.
Yet another tsunami-themed place.

Yet more tsunami obsession.

Pat enjoying a bear claw (this, after befriending the Welcome Bear at St. Paul Union Depot).

After our relatively short day, our second hiker/biker campground, conveniently next to the regular RV campground, but not too close. Plus, our site was only six bucks a biker.

Cape Lookout State Park, a stone's throw from the Pacific and a great beach. Possibly the greatest campsite I've ever had.

Some previous hiker/biker left this little memento.

The RV/car tent campground was full, and they paid a lot more. Fortunately for us, it was far enough away to be out of hearing range, but close enough to walk to the showers.

We were the only campers in the hiker/biker campground.

In the middle of the night, I awoke to what I thought was freeway traffic noise—odd because there was no freeway anywhere close. Turned out it was only the ocean waves crashing.

Absolutely gorgeous beaches, mostly bereft of primates.

This is obviously not one of my photos, but it captures the cape and the two-mile climb up from the beach that awaits us tomorrow.
