Oregon Tour 2014 Day 4: Newport, Oregon to Florence, Oregon

This is the Yaquina Bay Bridge we were leery of yesterday. It would prove to be determinant of whether or not we would continue down the coast to Crescent City, California, or cross the Cascades to Eugene and head back up to Portland through the Willamette Valley.

This was a fairly short day in the saddle, around 55 miles with the couple of detours we took to get off the 101.

We had one really big climb, near Haceta Head,  and a couple of smaller ones. Yet, even with the low mileage, this was a pretty tough day.
Taking a break near the Siuslaw National Forest.

Haceta Head Lighthouse Lookout, high point of the day, literally and figuratively.

Haceta Head Lighthouse.

Florence Old Town and the Siulaw River.

More Old Town.

The Siuslaw Bridge on the 101. We will not be crossing that bridge tomorrow; we've decided to cross the mountains and head to Eugene instead.
The mileage does't take into account our detours. We took a detour through town on residential streets when we arrived as the 101 was quite un-bike friendly with no bike facilities through town. Yet another reason to abandon the coast for the valley.
